5 Ornamental Trees to Wake Up Your Front Yard
Carefully chosen trees can add an enormous amount of impact and beauty to your landscaping plan. The five ornamental trees featured in this article were chosen for their unique appearance and overall value in a large number of landscape settings. They are easy to find, grow, and enjoy. Each one adds a distinctive character to your overall yard design. These five varieties will considerably enhance your curb appeal.
Kousa Dogwood
The Cornus kousa or Benthamidia kousa, is a deciduous, ornamental, Japanese flowering tree which also produces edible fruit. The berries are often consumed by birds.

Average height and spread is 15’. They can grow up to 30’ tall and wide.
The Kousa dogwood can be grown in zones 5 through 8. The bloom in the spring, usually later than the more common species of Dogwood. The flowers are very distinct with a sturdy appearance.
Purple Plum
The Purple Plum, or Prunus cerasifera, has similar height and spread characteristics as the Kousa Dogwood. It will grow in zones 4 through 9. The spectacular purple foliage will add color and drama to any landscape. It blooms in the early spring with small, white, fragrant flowers. It also produces small, round, edible fruit.
Japanese Red Maple
The Japanese Red Maple, or Acer palmatum, is a small, deciduous tree prized for its beauty and character. It is hardy in zones 6 through 10. The red foliage makes this tree an eye-catching favorite. Create an instant focal point with the addition of a Japanese Red Maple.
Eastern Redbud
The Eastern Redbud, or Cercis canadensis produces amazing, dramatic, deep pink flowers in early Spring. The large, heart shaped leaves emerge after the bloom. Height can reach 30 feet with a similar spread. It is hardy in zones 4 through 9.
Kwanzan Flowering Cherry aka Prunus serrulata
The spring cherry blossoms are nothing short of spectacular. Even after the large, pink blossoms fall, they create a stunning carpet of pink snow on your lawn or garden. Nothing signals spring and the approaching milder weather like the Kwanzan Flowering Cherry.
They grow very fast for those interested in creating a lot of curb appeal in a short time. It’s hardy in zones 5 through 9 and will grow 30 to 40 feet tall with a similar spread.
