Landscape and Garden Design Tip #7 Practice Restraint
Planning ahead and practicing a little restraint will pay off in the long run. Well placed plants will grow and fill out their areas quickly enough. There’s no reason to occupy every square inch of your garden . Also, remember to include mulch in your garden plan. Mulch generously in the early years.
Less can be more.
This will eliminate the need for weeding and help the soil maintain moisture. Overplanting in the beginning will make this task harder to accomplish. Start out with evergreens for architecture. Add bulbs, perennials and annuals among them for consistent color throughout the seasons. Be realistic about how much space you can keep healthy, beautiful and weed-free.
*Suggestion: Every spring I fill my large patio pots with at least one small evergreen. (Arborvitae, Dwarf Alberta Spruce or Leyland Cypress) I fill the remainder with annual flowers. In the fall, I have a much larger evergreen to plant along the outside border of my yard. This saves money and keeps my short term goals aligned with the long term.
