Design First!
Plan the architecture of the outdoor space first. Include all of the elements that you’d like to have. It helps to think of the space as you would an interior room. You may need a conversation area and an area for dining. Create a simple overhead drawing of your yard. Don’t worry about being an artist. Many spectacular gardens have begun with simple, primitive sketches.
 If you can draw a box for a house and a circle for a tree you’re on your way. If you don't like the idea of drawing it out on paper, you can design it with the help of computer software.
